I’m excited today to celebrate my own daughter as part of my ‘People of Orangeville’ series.
Charley is an 11 year old grade 6 student and is a lover of the theatre. My home is always full of song because she has a passion for music and shares her love of it with all of us…always! Charley also loves to hang out with her friends, jump on the trampoline, ride her bike, send crazy SnapChats….normal 11 year old stuff.
But what sets Charley apart from alot of other kids her age is her determination to make the world a better place by showing kindness and by giving back to her community. Charley has already devoted more hours to community service than I can count. Her charities of choice are Headwaters Healthcare Centre’s oncology expansion as well as any charity that supports cancer research such as the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.
Last year, Charley teamed up with Sean Coulter of the Edge Wine Bar and Grille and raised $1500 for the oncology expansion at Headwaters with Sean’s foundation, Taking the Edge Off Cancer where she shaved her head for the cause. Not only was she able to raise some money, she also donated her beautiful locks to Angel Hair for Kids to make wigs for kids who have lost their hair during their chemo treatments.
Sadly, in January 2017, Sean lost his long and courageous battle with Hodgkins Lymphoma and that further inspired Charley to make sure she was doing her part in Keeping Cancer Care Closer to Home. So, she decided that she would shave her head again, this time setting her sights on raising $2000 for the hospital. She has a GoFundMe page set up and just one week into her fundraising efforts and she is already well on her way to reaching her goal.
June 10th and 11th is ‘Taking The Edge Off Cancer’ weekend at The Edge Wine Bar & Grille. On June 10th, they will be having ‘Sean’s EDGEstravaganza’ (tickets for this awesome event are available at The Edge – but hurry…they’re already 50% sold out) and on June 11th, they will be doing their 3rd Annual BurgerQuest where local restaurant owners compete for the title of Best Burger in Orangeville! This is a great family event and tickets will be available the day of the event! (AND Charley will be shaving her head AT this event!!!! Make sure you come out and show your support!)
